Favorite summer tradition

A favorite summer-time childhood memory is catching lightening bugs, or fireflies.  At least it is for those in rural areas.  I once read a blog post by a lady, who will remain anonymous, that had me laughing so hard I nearly cried.  She had grown up in the city her entire life.  After marriage, she and her husband moved to a more rural state and lived along the river.  She said one night she was sitting outside and thought for sure she must’ve been experiencing vision problems.  She kept seeing small flashing lights.  The first night she shrugged it off, but it kept happening every night after that.  Certain she was going blind, she made an appointment with an optometrist.  After telling him her dilemma, he chuckled and asked where she lived.  Along the river she told him.  He cracked up laughing and explained her vision was fine.  She was seeing fireflies.

That seems silly to those of us who have always lived in the country, but I guess if you always lived among the city lights…… Smile

Anyway, tonight we took a few moments to enjoy the simple childhood pastime of catching lightening bugs (that’s what we call them in KY).

Yes, that is a fond childhood memory of my own. What a great story, lol!! I remember doing the same thing you and Beauty did, putting the lightening bugs (that's also what we called them in AL) in mason jars. We don't have many around here, but when we visited KS, they had lots. The kids were able to catch their first ones. I love seeing my children as they make the same memories I made as a child.

You have some interesting and informative blog posts. This one hit a chord with me though. As a child, we (my brother & I) would catch fireflies or lightening bugs, as we called them, in Mason jars too. Sadly, I hardly ever see them anymore. I live on the outskirts of a small town and there are woody areas near my house, we just don't see them here.
Thanks for following me over at Life or Something Like It, following back via GFC & NB.
